Growing up in rural North Burlington, Roy started working at age 11 on a neighbour’s hog farm to make money to purchase a used 3-speed English racer bicycle (long before they were all the rage). At 13, he started working for Pete’s Garden Service during the summer vacation, where he learned the basics of property maintenance by hand. In 1977, Hank Gelderman became Roy’s neighbour. That fall, Hank hired Roy on to help with fall cleanups, and Roy has been with Gelderman Landscape Services ever since. During his years at the company, Roy completed Sheridan College’s Environmental Horticulture I & II, becoming a journeyman garden/greenskeeper. In recent years, Roy has become well versed in computers and programming to help manage the growing landscape operations.
Roy and his wife Mary have been married for 32 years. They are blessed with four sons, two daughters and four beautiful grandchildren. The pleasure of working in the horticulture trade has obviously been passed down, as three of their four sons are also working in the landscaping trade.
