A water garden will add a whole new feel to your backyard paradise.
From the sound of water, to a gorgeous display for the eyes, to attracting birds and aquatic life, a water feature adds a whole new feel to your garden.
Water displays may be as simple as a small container on the deck to a large pond, such as the one featured in the above photo, complete with waterfalls, large stone structures and many plantings. We created this pond for one of our clients.
No matter the size of your property or budget, a water garden can be made to fit your specific landscape needs. If you’re thinking of building your pond, make sure you understand it’s more than just a hole in the ground filled with water.
You will need to decide on where to best place your pond for maximum enjoyment. It could be next to your deck if you spend a lot of time there, or place it where it enhances the entire garden. Keep in mind, though, that most water plants require at least four hours of sunlight to do their best. Do not locate a pond in the lowest point in the yard, as this may cause some serious drainage problems.
You may want to add fish to your pond to create even more interest. Not only do they add to the beauty of the pond, but help to lower the algae issue and mosquitoes. Adding fish doesn’t need to be a big expense. Regular goldfish work very well. The pond will also attract other life such as frogs, toads, aquatic insects and birds.
You will definitely want to add plants to a pond. These include both underwater and floating. Most garden centres now carry an excellent selection of plants.
Although a pond is a tremendous addition to any garden, they do require some effort to maintain. But it’s well worth it.
