Back to School Safety

Chances are you’re taking someone back to school this morning. Follow these tips from CAA to keep your students safe en route, however you get them there.

Bus

  • When getting to the bus stop, kids should walk along the sidewalk and, if crossing the street, stay well in front of the bus while maintaining eye contact with the driver
  • Don’t forget to look both ways before crossing the street
  • Once on the bus, kids should find a seat, keep the aisle clear & listen to the driver
  • When leaving, they should keep a safe distance from the bus

Walk

  • Students should embrace the buddy system, and know the safest routes between home & school
  • Keep electronics stashed in backpacks
  • Dress appropriately for the weather

Bike

  • A safe bike ride starts with well maintained equipment and a property fitted helmet
  • Kids should wear bright, reflective clothing to be visible from the road
  • Before your kids bike to school without you, take them on a test ride to point out potential dangers
  • Educate young bike riders on the rules of the road

Drive

  • Lead by example and be a responsible driver when you take your kids to school
  • Reduce congestion by forming a carpool (only let kids out in designated pick-up and drop-off areas)
  • Make sure you stop when you see a school bus with red, flashing lights
