PLANT OF THE MONTH: Acanthus mollis

Acanthus mollis (aka Bears Breeches) is a clump forming perennial with dark green leaves. Its summer bloom has purple bracts with purple tinted stems.

Its upright spikes of blooms tower over above its shiny lobed foliage. This plant is sure to attract butterflies!

Growing Conditions: Best in deep, rich, well-drained soil. Needs protection from hot afternoon sun. Fairly easy to maintain.

Size: Bear’s Breeches will grow to about 4ft tall and wide.

Hardiness: Evergreen to zone 7

Where to Plant: Great as an eye catching, structural element.

Plant Partners: Himalayan Birch, Hosta, Japanese Forest Grass, Jacob’s Ladder, Coral Bells

Designer’s Tip: Take advantage of this plant’s upright form and use to contrast lower growing plants.
