Over the fall & winter Gelderman planted approximately 40 new trees at Cherry Heights Park in Stoney Creek as part of the cities ongoing battle against the invasive emerald ash borer.
Steve Barnhart, city manager of forestry and horticulture, confirmed about 30 dying ash trees were recently removed from Cherry Heights Park. In their place, we planted about 40 new trees, in a diverse range of 14 species, including black maples, northern pin oaks, tulip trees and elms.
Across North America, municipalities are being forced to cut down their once proud ash trees to combat the emerald ash borer. City forestry staff have indicated more than 800 ash trees have been earmarked for removal in Stoney Creek’s Ward 10. Nearly 400 were cut down last year. City staff has warned the borer will eventually wipe out all of the city’s remaining ash trees.
