Victory Gardens are a form of urban agriculture since they exist within the confines of a city. The Hamilton Victory Gardens contain raised beds constructed with concrete blocks and supplemented with rich triple mix in order to provide a good growing environment.
During the growing season, maintenance of gardens by volunteer workers is required a minimum 3 days per week. Once ripe, produce is harvested and delivered immediately to local soup kitchens and food banks in order to maintain produce freshness.
Recently, Gelderman Landscaping along with other volunteers donated time and energy and installed an irrigation system at the Good Shepherd Center on Catherine St. We want to express our sincere appreciation for your very generous donation. It has been a tremendous help already to have the plants watered by the irrigation system rather than having to do so manually, said Bill Wilcox, Chairman of Hamilton Victory Gardens.
In 2012, there are plans for Hamilton Victory Gardens to have at least 4 new garden sites with an estimated total yield of almost 20,000 lbs of produce! This faith-based, volunteer not-for-proft organization is working to bring neighbourhoods and communities together for the common purpose of growing urban gardens in order to provide local, organic and fresh produce to our marginalized population through local food banks and soup kitchens.
