Use Lighting to Extend Your Outdoor Season

Outdoor lighting extends your enjoyment of your patio, deck or garden until later in the year.

It’s officially fall – the sun is coming up later and setting earlier, but lucky for us in Southern Ontario, we can enjoy the outdoors far into the season! Landscape lighting can extend your outdoor entertaining season well into the fall, while creating drama and interest, and bringing to life the garden and outdoor space that you have invested in.

When it comes to lighting outdoor spaces, most people tend to think of simply illuminating the exterior of a structure or property. One of the most underestimated aspects of landscape lighting is that it can actually extend living space physically as well as visually.

When light is brought to a dark back or front yard, it visually pushes the boundaries of a house. The more elements that are lit, the more people will push the edges of where a person will tend to gravitate to beyond the interior of a house. Pushing this boundary creates a visually striking look for the outside of the house, especially when the interior lights are turned off.

Illuminating the outdoor areas of your home lets you enjoy evenings on your deck until much later in the year, but this isn’t the only reason to add landscape lighting:

**Security**: Lighting can reveal dark areas in your landscape where someone might try to hide.

**Safety**: Outdoor lighting ensures resident and visitors can safely navigate around the property at night. No more stumbling over steps in the dark, low-voltage lighting gives you and your guests the confidence to walk around after the suns gone down.

**Beauty:** Low voltage lighting highlights the architectural elements of your home, and accentuates the features of your landscape:

– Bring depth to your yard in the evening hours, enhancing both its appearance and functionality
– Direct eyes towards a dramatic tree or water feature as a focal point
– Create a warm ambiance for patio entertaining
– Draw your guests in with lit walkways and paths

**Economy & Energy Savings**: Low-voltage lighting consumes about 1/3 the electricity compared to high-voltage systems and is far less expensive to install

– By using less power to emit the same amount of light as a halogen or incandescent lamp, low-voltage LEDs help you to save money and energy
– LED lamps have an L70 rating of 40,000 hours (at 6 hours per night run time, LED lamps last approximately 18.25 years)
